Analogical Matching for Specification Reuse

Neil A. M. Maiden, Alistair G. Sutcliffe

Abstract

A retrieval mechanism for analogical specification reuse across domains is proposed. This mechanism represents a hybrid of several existing analogical mapping paradigms based on a model of software engineering analogies identifying critical determinants of such analogies. Analogical mapping is constrained semantically, structurally, pragmatically and abstractly, to ensure that two domains are analogical only if they are both instances of the same abstract domain class. Determinants of software engineering analogies are presented in terms of their critical knowledge structures, then the analogical matching mechanism mapping these knowledge structures to class-inclusive abstract domain models is described. Finally an implementation and evaluation of the analogical retrieval mechanism is outlined, and implications for future work are discussed.
