Software design is a key concern in code review through which developers actively discuss and improve each code change. Nevertheless, code review is predominantly a cooperative task influenced by both technical and social aspects. Consequently, these aspects can play a key role i…
Dynamic program analysis is a long-standing technique for obtaining information about program execution. We present module recontextualization, a new dynamic analysis approach that targets modern dynamic languages such as JavaScript and Racket, enabled by the fact that they featu…
Many novice programmers visit Stack Overflow for purposes that include posing questions and finding answers for issues they come across in the process of programming. Many questions have more than one correct answer on Stack Overflow, which are accompanied by number of comments f…
With the rise of new AI technologies, autonomous systems are moving towards a paradigm in which increasing levels of responsibility are shifted from the human to the system, creating a transition from human-in-the-loop systems to human-on-the-loop (HoTL) systems. This has a signi…
Open source packages have source code available on repositories for inspection (e.g. on GitHub) but developers use pre-built packages directly from the package repositories (such as npm for JavaScript, PyPI for Python, or RubyGems for Ruby). Such convenient practice assumes that …
The quality of method names is critical for the readability and maintainability of source code. However, it is often challenging to construct concise method names. To alleviate this problem, a number of approaches have been proposed to automatically recommend high-quality names f…
Human society is rapidly transforming to the digital society, the new technologies drive digital and intelligent transformation in all industries. These technologies promise cost savings, efficiency gains, and new value. At the same time, we see growing challenges relating to cyb…
Deep neural network (DNN) has become the leading technology to realize Artificial Intelligence (AI). As DNN models become larger and more complex, so do datasets. Being able to efficiently train DNNs in parallel has become a crucial need. Data Parallelism (DP) is the widest-used …
Programming by Example (PBE) is a program synthesis paradigm in which the synthesizer creates a program that matches a set of given examples. In many applications of such synthesis (e.g., program repair or reverse engineering), we are to reconstruct a program that is close to a s…
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming increasingly important and widely used in modern society. Software bugs in these systems can cause severe issues, such as system crashes, hangs, and undefined behaviors. Some bugs can also be exploited by hackers to launch security att…
The delta debugging problem concerns how to reduce an object while preserving a certain property, and widely exists in many applications, such as compiler development, regression fault localization, and software debloating. Given the importance of delta debugging, multiple algori…
Unit testing focuses on verifying the functions of individual units of a software system. It is challenging due to the high inter-dependencies among software units. Developers address this by mocking-replacing the dependency by a "faked" object. Despite the existence of powerful,…
Despite over a decade of research, it is still challenging for mobile UI testing tools to achieve satisfactory effectiveness, especially on industrial apps with rich features and large code bases. Our experiences suggest that existing mobile UI testing tools are prone to explorat…
To analyze large-scale data efficiently, developers have created various big data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark). These big data processing frameworks provide abstractions to developers so that they can focus on implementing the data analysis logic. In traditional sof…
This paper presents iBatch, a middleware system running on top of an operational Ethereum network to enable secure batching of smart-contract invocations against an untrusted relay server off-chain. iBatch does so at a low overhead by validating the server's batched invocations i…
Recent years have seen rapid increases in cybercrime. The use of effective software security activities plays an important part in preventing the harm involved. Objective research on industry use of software security practices is needed to help development teams, academic researc…
Microservices architecture, which is increasingly being adopted by large technology companies, can accelerate development and deployment of backend code by partitioning a monolithic infrastructure into independent components. At the same time, microservices often compose into mas…
Serverless computing is an emerging paradigm for cloud computing, gaining traction in a wide range of applications such as video processing and machine learning. This new paradigm allows developers to focus on the development of the logic of serverless computing based application…
We replicated the main result of DeepBugs, a bug detection algorithm for name-based bugs. The original authors evaluated it in three contexts: swapped-argument bugs, wrong binary operator, and wrong binary operator operands. We followed the algorithm and replicated the results for…
Automatically repairing a buggy program is essentially a search problem, searching for code transformations that pass a set of tests. Various search strategies have been explored, but they either navigate the search space in an ad hoc way using heuristics, or systemically but at …
